Where I come from and how I got here…

Hi, I’m Ana Juma — a journaling facilitator and educator on a mission to help people cultivate deeper self-understanding through words.

I’m also the founder of Prophsee, an independent publishing house dedicated to creating writing experiences that inspire reflection and self-expression. Having experienced the transformative power of journaling firsthand, I’m committed to sparking a modern renaissance of pen and paper in a world that’s constantly scrolling.

The early days

Born and raised in Portugal, I was a quiet yet cheeky child. I loved hip-hop but took ballet classes. I excelled as an A-student but dragged myself to school. I dreamt about being an artist but graduated in Marketing & Business. I was living to match the expectations others had on me.

Most people don’t know about this, but…

As a teenager, I often felt different, as if I didn’t belong. My struggle with self-esteem and self-hatred ran so deep that, for months, I covered the mirror in my bedroom with a cloth because I couldn’t bear to face my own reflection. Behind closed doors, I wrestled with severe depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. Life offered me moments of joy, yet I couldn’t embrace them — I had not yet learned how to truly connect with myself.

This had me secretly coming in and out of rehab until I was 20. Walking hand in hand with life’s fragility made me start asking the “big questions” at a young age and look at aspects of myself that most of us avoid. During that time, the pages of my journals held the emotions and stories I was too afraid to express out loud. They became the only reflection I had the courage to face — the safe space where I could embrace the full spectrum of being human: imperfect, vulnerable, and real.

In every end, there’s a beginning

There was no way out of my illness – but there was a way through. What I thought to be an irreversible breakdown, it was actually a breakthrough. The difficult times led me on a seeker’s journey of finding answers in books and poetry… And this is how personal development became (secretly) an integral part of my life. I started to heal.

Taking back my power

In 2015, I left the security of a corporate job and moved to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to pursue my interest in personal transformation. I joined the Mindvalley team and watched over their online community of 3 million students, making sure that their message spread far and wide to fulfill the vision of raising human consciousness through education.

During those years, journaling became both my anchor and my experiment. I began with simple practices — a gratitude list at night, stream-of-consciousness writing in the morning — and soon, friends and colleagues who wanted to start journaling turned to me for guidance.

By 2018, my own practice had evolved into a method. That year, I created the Life Journal, a 13-week guided system designed to help people live with greater clarity and intention through the power of writing.

Growth never ends

Two years later, in the midst of the pandemic — as the world collectively turned inward — I launched Prophsee with the vision of creating journaling tools that support healing and growth.

On a personal level, I was moving through what felt like a second dark night of the soul. Poetry became my way of making sense of that not-so-gentle season of growth, and in 2022, my first book Back to Earth was born.

Today, I’m a certified Journal to the Self® instructor, furthering my studies at the Therapeutic Writing Institute.

I share the power of journaling in many ways — from hosting workshops in Lisbon to teaching in companies, guiding 1:1 clients, and creating free resources on my YouTube channel.

At the heart of it all, my mission is simple: to make journaling a recognized wellness practice — as natural and widespread as yoga or meditation — so that more people can connect with themselves, heal, and live with intention.
